Today, grocery stores are filled with convenience foods. Sometimes they are frozen and you just heat them up, and sometimes you just add ground beef and water. Either way, these processed foods are usually high in sodium, contain a lot of bad calories such as simple carbs and saturated fat and low in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fiber. The healthiest groceries you can buy are those that are unprocessed. The more processing that goes into a product, the more nutrients get taken out. Processing also adds preservatives which are not always healthy. Sodium is also added to preserve and for taste (and hypertension). Instead of buying processed foods, buy fresh ingredients and make your own meals. Buy fresh vegetables, pasta, meat and sauce and simply mix. It is usually cheaper and almost always healthier. The fresher the food, the healthier it is. For more healthy grocery tips, visit the Guide to Healthy Grocery Shopping.
