Fats come in many varieties both healthy and unhealthy. Sometimes they can get even unhealthier than the unhealthy. Fats add flavor to our food and picking the good ones will leave a better taste in your mouth at the end of the day. Good fats come mainly from plant sources such as olive and canola oils. Many oil based salad dressings are made from olive oil. Some oil based substitutes (butter substitutes) are also made from different vegetable oils which have a high amount of unsaturated fat. They can also be found in nuts and fish. Animal products such as milk, dairy and meat tend to be high in saturated fat that should be consumed sparingly. Other sources of bad fats are baked goods, margarine, shortening and lard. For more foods that are rich in unsaturated, heart healthy fats, visit the Guide to Dietary Fats.
